Pinterest Projects Moderated Q3 Revenue Growth

Image-sharing platform Pinterest has projected a slower pace of revenue growth for the third quarter, signaling an increasingly competitive landscape in digital advertising. The company's shares experienced a 6% decline in extended trading following the announcement.

For the current quarter, Pinterest anticipates revenue to fall within the range of $1.19 billion to $1.21 billion, representing a growth rate of 13% to 15%. This forecast aligns closely with analysts' average estimate of $1.20 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. However, this projected growth marks a deceleration compared to the 18% revenue expansion reported in its second quarter. During the three months ending June 30, the company generated $1.18 billion in revenue, surpassing estimates of $1.15 billion.

Intensifying Digital Advertising Rivalry

The digital advertising sector is experiencing heightened competition, with several major players enhancing their offerings. Meta, for instance, continues to refine its Advantage+ ad automation tools, while Reddit has introduced a comparable product. OpenAI is also increasing its focus on advertising, further intensifying the market. Additionally, Google recently updated Google Images with AI-powered personalized feeds and visual discovery features that bear resemblance to Pinterest's functionalities, indicating a broader strategic push into AI-driven search and shopping by the search engine giant.

Pinterest's Strategic Responses and Performance

In response to the evolving market, Pinterest has been expanding its Performance+ suite, an AI-powered tool designed to assist advertisers in optimizing and scaling their campaigns with reduced manual effort. Bill Ready, Pinterest's CEO, emphasized the role of artificial intelligence, stating, "AI is at the heart of our momentum and is a clear accelerant for our business."

Earlier this year, the company completed the acquisition of tvScientific. This strategic move aims to extend advertisers' reach beyond traditional social media platforms into connected TV, thereby providing Pinterest access to a wider pool of advertising budgets.

The platform also reported robust user and revenue metrics for the second quarter. Its global monthly active users increased by 11% year-over-year, reaching 640 million. Concurrently, the average revenue per user saw a 7% rise, settling at $1.86.
