Search AI Overhauls Trigger Sharp Drop in Referral Traffic
Premarket trading saw steep declines across digital platform equities after social media operators highlighted significant shifts in discovery patterns and advertising demand. Reddit shares experienced a drop of 23%, while Pinterest declined by 8% following their respective business disclosures.
Reddit alerted investors that incoming visitors routed through search engines diminished by upwards of one million users weekly on average during October. Should this downward pattern persist, the platform noted that overall daily active unique visitors might decrease by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter, retreating from a base of roughly 130 million.
Market analysts from JPMorgan pointed out that broader deployment of Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, combined with modifications impacting machine-translated listings, directly reduced search-directed audience flow. Commentators at Piper Sandler suggested that a recalibration of financial expectations is now warranted as operational visibility becomes increasingly constrained in the short term.
Infrastructure Commitments and Disappointing Revenue Projections
Despite user acquisition friction, Reddit outlined substantial technological investments in a regulatory filing. The platform prolonged its cloud infrastructure agreements with Amazon Web Services and Google through 2029, pledging outlays of $880 million and $580 million, respectively, across a three-year span.
Simultaneously, Pinterest reported financial figures that trailed analyst consensus. Third-quarter revenue reached $1.17 billion, falling short of the $1.21 billion anticipated by consensus estimates compiled by LSEG. For the concluding quarter, the company projected revenue between $1.425 billion and $1.475 billion, also missing broader market benchmarks.
Analysts at RBC observed that policy alterations surrounding the European Union's de minimis threshold accelerated headwinds for cross-border retailers faster than anticipated, resulting in flat revenue performance across European operations.
Sustained Losses Weigh on Valuations
The latest drops deepen an extended contraction for both tech platforms. Prior to Friday's market session, Reddit had shed approximately 44% of its equity value over the current year, whereas Pinterest had retreated roughly 23%.
If current premarket valuations carry through regular trading sessions, Reddit stands to erase approximately $5.7 billion from its total market capitalization, alongside a projected contraction of around $900 million for Pinterest.
